Last fall, I started feeling a bit light-headed and I had no idea why. It lasted for a few weeks and it really worried me. I’m normally very healthy. I take care of myself, try to eat nutritiously. I exercise regularly. I get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. But something was not right. I felt tremendous tension in my shoulders and neck and wondered if that tension was causing the slight dizziness.

I’m very proactive when it comes to my health and rarely wait to make a Doctor’s appointment if I’m not 100%. And so, with the light headedness persisting, I made every appointment I could – with a Cardiologist, an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist, a Neurologist, my Internist. I got complete blood work done. All checked out to be 100% fine, including my blood pressure, which is often a sign of stress if the numbers are off.

I kept asking myself why I was feeling so weird with the light headedness? Could it have been allergies? Either way, I still had huge knots in my shoulders.

I came to my own conclusion that my problem was stress, that the intense knots in my shoulders and neck, were affecting the blood vessels in my head, around my ears, and causing the light headedness. This was a self-diagnosis, as no doctor would tell me that.

After weeks of tests and talking to Doctors who found absolutely nothing wrong, I decided I had to treat the knots and tension in my shoulders and neck, as that had to be what was affecting my head, causing the slight dizziness, I concluded.

I also realized that before the pandemic, I was taking a yoga class regularly once a week but that it had been over six months since I did yoga to help relax my mind and body, stretch, and focus on my breathing. Usually I swim everyday to release stress, and to help my body with stretching and flexibility, but it was October, I was still in New York at that time, so swimming outdoors was out of season! My life was busier than ever. I had my usual full load of work; I organized and hosted my annual charity golf tournament which turned out to be a huge success but was most stressful, pulling it off in the middle of the pandemic! Plus, I was flying to Florida frequently to help my siblings take care of our Mom. The combination of all of this in addition to all the other day-to-day things in my busy schedule, was apparently causing massive stress! And I was feeling it! 

So one day I searched the internet for an on-line yoga class and I resumed doing yoga in my home. I did it a couple times a week to ease the tension in my back, shoulders and neck. I took stretching classes on-line as well. I did classes that isolated exercises for the upper back and neck.

And you may want to consider seeing a professional counselor or therapist, who can help you identify sources of your stress and learn ways to deal with it.

Doctors urge all to get emergency help immediately if you have chest pain, especially if you also have shortness of breath, jaw or back pain, pain radiating into your shoulder and arm, sweating, dizziness, or nausea. These may be warning signs of a heart attack and not simply stress symptoms.
