CBD and Mental Health

A lot has been written about CBD and mental health, and the potential benefits of CBD to ease anxiety, and support over-all wellness. Yet for as popular as CBD has become in recent years, it is mind-boggling to me that there hasn’t been more studies done to test and monitor results.

According to ADDA, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America:

There is insufficient scientific evidence to support the claim that CBD is an effective treatment for depression or anxiety. That does not mean it would not help, but there simply haven’t been properly controlled clinical trials to support an indication of CBD for treating anxiety or depression. Considerably more research is required to evaluate CBD as a potential treatment for anxiety and depression.

Let’s explore what has been written about ‘mental health’ and the connection between CBD and over-all wellness.

According to the World Health Organization, mental health is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Stress seems to be a huge part of most people’s lives, especially in the US, and many are turning to alternatives, such as CBD, for relief. According to this article in Yahoo.com, celebrities from Olivia Newton John and Ron Gronkowski, Michael J. Fox to Melissa Etheridge, they all advocate the use of CBD to help reduce stress. The exact way CBD works to reduce feelings of stress is not fully understood, but this has not stopped millions from using CBD. In a 2019 Gallup poll, it is reported that 14% of all Americans are using CBD.

In my own travels, particularly in the golf community, I’m seeing that more and more people are becoming educated on the benefits of using natural treatments like CBD instead of traditional medical treatments and pharmaceuticals. I find that golfers of all ages, particularly men in their fifties and sixties, are educated on the benefits of CBD, and many have told me that they use it regularly to help them relax on the course, to sleep better and/or to fight inflammation and muscle soreness.

As I wrote in my blog last month about Stress and CBD, what I do to enhance my over-all mental health includes getting plenty of exercise, stretch and do yoga several times a week; running, walking, biking, golfing, and swimming. I make sure I get plenty of rest, eat nutritious foods and drink lots of water. I think it’s always important to take a step back, reassess our busy lives, look at our health, and then find ways to improve our over-all well-being to enhance our mental health.
